Hi-G-Tek Establishes OEM Relationship with CANBERRA to Supply Ruggedized Security Monitoring Solutions   

Unique, Wireless Application Suited to Harsh Environments Improves Safety and Security for Municipalities

Rockville, MD. -- November 12, 2008 -- Hi-G-Tek (www.higtek.com), a developer and manufacturer of active-RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) sensing and control solutions for tracking high-value cargo and sensitive materials, has established an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) relationship with CANBERRA (www.canberra.com), the world's leading supplier of systems, instruments and services for radiation detection, identification and material protection. Through this partnership, Hi-G-Tek supplies its wireless RFID seals, locks and readers for integration with CANBERRA’s solution portfolio.

CANBERRA provides fixed, mobile and portable detection devices that identify the presence of radioactive materials in packages, containers, vehicles and on people for utilization in a variety of applications including border security, first response, emergency management, transportation and facility security. Additionally, the company provides material and process integrity assurances and breach detection safeguards. Utilizing this latter competency, CANBERRA and Hi-G-Tek partnered to develop a unique active-RFID monitoring tool using Hi-G-Tek’s Pro-Active technology, which is suitable for use in radioactive environments. Notably, the solution is ideal for the protection of essential national infrastructure and is currently in use as an Early Warning System (EWS) at the Jefferson Water Treatment Plant in Laredo, Texas. This EWS was designed to protect the facility from contamination by harmful materials and pollutants and provides protection to customers by evaluating water for potentially harmful contaminates prior to distribution. 

The EWS supplies real-time, automated warnings of contamination to the appropriate personnel, enabling authorities to act quickly to contain pollutants and minimize potential risks to customers. The system provides this security with the use of several key components including motion detection cameras, which monitor movement in defined areas and transmit unauthorized movements to alert local law enforcement. RFID seals, being a very important segment of the system, are secure entry hatches and act as locks that transmit notification immediately if an unauthorized entry occurs.
